How to add a signature in Gmail on desktop and mobile.

To add a signature in Gmail on a computer, click the gear icon, choose See all settings, and scroll to Signature on the General tab. Click Create new, paste or type your signature, set it as the default for new emails and replies, then click Save Changes at the bottom of the page. The Gmail apps for Android and iPhone use that signature too, unless you set a separate plain-text mobile signature.

How do I add a signature in Gmail on a computer?

    Open all settings

    Click the gear icon at the top right of Gmail, then See all settings.

    Scroll to Signature

    Stay on the General tab and scroll down until you reach the Signature section.

    Create a new signature

    Click Create new, give it a name such as Work, and click Create.

    Paste or type your signature

    Click in the editor box and press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac) to paste a signature copied from SignatureGen.

    Set the signature defaults

    Under Signature defaults, pick the signature for For new emails use and On reply/forward use.

    Optional: place it above quoted text

    Tick "Insert signature before quoted text in replies and remove the '--' line that precedes it" so your signature sits directly under your reply.

    Click Save Changes

    The button is at the very bottom of the settings page. Leaving without it discards the signature.

If you send from more than one address with Send mail as, choose the address in the Signature defaults dropdown and set defaults for each one.

Multiple signatures

How do I use multiple signatures in Gmail?

Repeat Create new for each signature you need, such as a full version for new emails and a short one for replies. Assign them under Signature defaults, then save. While writing a message, click the Insert signature icon (a pen) in the compose toolbar to swap to a different signature or remove it for that one email.

How do I add a signature in the Gmail app on Android?

How do I add a signature in the Gmail app on iPhone?

Mobile signatures are plain text only. If you don't set one, Google says the app uses the signature you created on your computer, so leave the mobile signature off if you want your designed signature on messages sent from your phone.

How do I add a photo or logo to a Gmail signature?

Gmail's signature editor has an Insert image button that accepts an image from Google Drive, an upload, or a web address. The most dependable option is an image hosted at a public https://URL, because every recipient's mail client can load it. If you pick a Drive image, change its sharing to anyone with the link first, or recipients may see a broken image.

Keep images small. A headshot around 80 to 100 pixels wide or a logo up to about 200 pixels wide is plenty, and resizing large images first avoids errors when saving. In SignatureGen, paste your hosted image link into the photo field before you copy the signature.

HTML signatures

How do I paste an HTML signature into Gmail?

Gmail has no HTML source view for signatures, so you paste the rendered signature rather than code. Build it in the Gmail signature generator, click Copy (not Copy HTML), and paste into the signature editor on a computer. Gmail keeps table layouts and inline styles, which is how SignatureGen templates are built, so the layout survives the paste. Then send a test email to another address to check the result.

Troubleshooting

Why isn't my Gmail signature working?

"Signature is too long"

Gmail allows up to 10,000 characters, and that count includes formatting code, not just visible text. Embedded images are the usual culprit. Swap them for hosted image URLs and remove extra formatting. The SignatureGen builder shows a live character count so you can check before copying.

Images are broken or missing

Make sure the image URL is public and starts with https, or that a Drive image is shared with anyone who has the link. Some recipients block images by default, so your name and contact details should work without them.

The signature appears below the quoted email

Turn on "Insert signature before quoted text in replies" in the Signature section and click Save Changes.

Formatting disappears when pasting

Paste into Gmail settings in a desktop browser, not the mobile app. If the paste still comes out as plain text, copy the signature again and paste with Ctrl+V rather than a "paste as plain text" shortcut.

Why can't I save my Gmail signature?

The most common cause is the 10,000-character limit, which counts the formatting code as well as the text you see. Images pasted as embedded data use up the limit quickly. Replace them with images linked from a hosted URL, then click Save Changes at the bottom of the settings page.

Why doesn't my Gmail signature show up on my phone?

If you turned on a mobile signature in the Gmail app, it replaces your computer signature on messages sent from that phone. Turn the mobile signature off to use the signature you set on your computer, or update the mobile one.

Can I have more than one signature in Gmail?

Yes. Create several signatures under Settings > See all settings > General > Signature, set separate defaults for new emails and replies, and switch signatures while composing with the Insert signature (pen) icon in the compose toolbar.

How do I add a logo to my Gmail signature?

In the signature editor, click the Insert image icon and add the logo from Google Drive, an upload, or a web address. Images at a public https URL are the most dependable. If you use a Drive image, share it so anyone with the link can view it.

Why is my Gmail signature hidden behind three dots?

Gmail collapses content that repeats earlier in a thread, and an identical signature often gets trimmed into the three-dot button. Recipients can click the dots to see it. The first message in a thread shows the signature in full.
